Though my books are primarily about dragons, there are vampires in my urban fiction. Like most writers, I've altered the vampire mythos to suit my particular world.

In my world, the vampires are...

...not hurt by sunlight. It doesn't bother them at all, though because they can see in the dark they prefer to hunt at night. It gives them a distinct advantage over their prey (humans).
...not hurt by holy symbols or other relics of faith. Though the vampire is demonic in origin (more on that later) they predate all human religions and therefore are not subject to them. So crosses don't hurt vamps. In fact, many of the vampires are religious, as they incorporated their religious beliefs into their new lifestyle. So, Christian and Muslim vampires believe vampirism is a gift from God. Many even go so far as to believe their respective prophets were vampires!
...not hurt by silver or killed by driving a stake through their heart. The only effective means of killing a vampire is decapitation or blasting them apart. Complete immolation works as well. A stake can be driven through their chest to hold them to the ground to aid in decapitation or creamation, but it doesn't kill them outright or paralyze them. It just pins them to the ground.
...blood drinkers, but they actually drink plasma. It has to be human plasma, though some vampires can learn to feed on the plasma of other vamps instead (which is considered a crime among vampires.) Drinking pure plasma is more nutritious for vampires, but it doesn't taste as good.
...given hypnotic powers, but they are weak at the beginning of the vampire's life. Even at their most powerful, they have a hard time convincing people to do things they aren't accoustomed to doing. Generally, they feed on someone and rather than kill them, erase their memory. This power works better on children than adults, so vampires are generally prone to feeding on children...which makes them very unpopular among other monsters and supernatural beings.
...are not immortal, but they live a very long time. The older a vampire gets, the less human they look so very old vampires can't disguise themselves as humans without great effort. In my third book, a very old vampire disguises himself as an old man in a wheelchair with an oxygen mask and a hat. Hardly an inconspicuous outfit, but it does keep people from seeing what he really is.
...hidden from the world. Depending on the nation they live in, vampires are either barely tolerated or hunted and killed. The U.S., U.K., and Canada are tolerate towards vampires so long as they don't reproduce or engage in any terrorist actions. Other countries are less accepting: Iran, North Korea, and Germany hunt and kills them on sight. Other countries, like the Russian Federation, China, and Cuba recruit vampires (and other supernatural creatures) into their secret services.
...aren't that sexy. Yes, some vampires are attractive, but by and large they are vicious monsters who don't care about anything but feeding. I have nothing against the sexy vampire mystique, and many fine writers have done it very well. But it wasn't what I wanted to go for in my books. I wanted the vampires to be monsters. The dragons are sexy enough as it is.
...are super strong. Not as strong as a dragon in human form--and nowhere near as strong as one in dragon form--but much stronger than a human. They are also immune to diseases and regenerate very quickly.
...aren't undead. In my books, vampires are not dead bodies. They are alive, just changed by a demonic virus. Repeated feeding from a vampire spreds this virus to the victim. Some are immune to it, others are killed by it, but a select few are able to carry the virus. It puts them in a death-like trance for a few days, after which they arise a vampire. The illness warps their minds and makes them ruthless and cold. They essentially become psychopaths, and lose the capacity for compassion or pity. If the vampire lives long enough, they lose almost all human emotios, including anger, lust, greed, etc. It is a very depressing life, but since the vampire can't get depressed it isn't really a problem for them.
...can't fly. Though they can take a plane.
...can use sorcery, but they have to learn it like anybody else. In my world, only certain people are able to use sorcery. A vampire can use it, even if they couldn't when they were human. Something about the transformation make it possible.

So there are my vamps. Check out my first book, due out next March, for more.

What is a real vampire? What are the different type of vampires and their differences?

Sanguine vampires (or sanguinarians) are vampires who feed by drinking blood. However, it is not the blood itself that they are feeding on. It is the life-force
energy contained within the blood. Blood drinking is arguably the most potent form of feeding on life-force energy, and many sanguinarians can thrive for
many weeks from a single feeding. (A single feeding is often about an ounce or two of blood taken from a willing donor.)

Psi (or psy) vampires are vampires that feed psychically on life force energies. Psi feeding (in any form) can be done from an individual (most often a
willing donor) or from the ambient energies of a group or crowd. However, psi feeding can also be done from a person without the individual realizing that
they are being fed from, many Psi vampires may consider it to be unethical to do so.
In general, the person being fed from is not harmed by the feeding
in any way.

Empathic vampires are vampires who feed on
emotional life-force energies from the emotions of people. There are those that will say that vampires that feed
on negative emotional energies (anger, fear, etc.) are negative/chaotic vampires and are a subcategory/specialization of empathic vampires.

Sexual vampires are vampires who feed on the life-force energies generated from having sex, especially the excess energies generated at the moment of orgasm.
They can do so psychically and/or from bodily fluids. Female sexual vampires are sometimes referred to as succubi (singularly, succubus), and male sexual
vampires are sometime referred to as incubi (singularly, incubus). Some will also refer to sexual vampires as tantric vampires.

Elemental vampires are vampires that are able to feed on the life force energies of the elements; earth, wind, fire, and water. Some will say that elemental
vampires are elementalists who are able to manipulate elemental energies and then convert those energies into consumable life-force energies.

Other "Vampires"
One such group of people is referred to as leeches or energy leeches by some within the vampire community. Such individuals are people who have developed
the ability to manipulate and feed on life-force energies in many of the ways vampires feed; however such individuals usually do not have a genuine need
for the life-force energies that they feed on.
